RI resident earns honor for dental hygiene

An oral care specialist from Rock Island has been honored for her work with elderly adults.
Linda Rowe recently has been appointed to the advisory board for HyLife LLC, a network of dental hygienists who provide weekly oral care services to the elderly in a home or care facility.
Rowe has practiced for 30 years in the Quad-Cities. After receiving her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Iowa, she was part of the college's research team and helped to develop the HyLife model of care.
Rowe is a past president of the Iowa Dental Care Hygienists Association and also presided over the Quad-Cities chapter of that organization. While in that position, Rowe met Angie Stone of Edgerton, Wis.
Stone was a guest speaker at a local event, Rowe said, where she spoke about research she was conducting in Wisconsin. Stone went on to found the Hylife organization after two relatives in care facilities had their health compromised by oral neglect. HyLife now operates in five states.
For her part, Rowe has clients at the Kahl Home and Senior Star in Davenport and Rosewood Care Center, Moline.
A thorough weekly tooth-brushing and flossing is considered preventative dental treatment for elderly people.
Rowe noted the elderly are at increased risk for pneumonia, especially aspiration pneumonia.
