Thousands of students in Pasco County will now have better access to dental care. A brand new mobile dental unit is making rounds to help children in need.
Dental hygienists at the county’s health department are busier than ever riding from school to school in its new Smile Care a Van.
Second grader Zara Williams gets her teeth cleaned and polished.
Pasco County’s health department received a $350,000 grant to outfit the van.
"We will be doing screenings and fluoride treatments and sealants for kids kindergarten through 2nd grade," said Health Officer, Mike Napier.
The treatments are going to children who really need it.
"We live in a day in age where we've seen an increase in the number of Title 1 schools, free and reduced lunch populations, it's an economic thing,” said Superintendent Kurt Browning. "Just because you don't want the resources doesn't mean you should go without basic health care."
“They can stay nice, healthy, and I won't lose anymore and they won't get rotten,” said Zara. “They'll be nice and healthy."
The Smile Care a Van has been to three schools so far. In the past few days the health department has served over 160 children.
For children to receive treatments parents must fill out a consent form that is sent home with the student.
The Smile Care a Van will go to 25 schools this year. The health department hopes to expand the program to even more schools in the future.
