An Austin dental office is offering area children a chance to give back some of their extra Halloween candy and serve a good cause all at the same time.
Dentists Elrod, Green and Hyland DDS is hosting its fourth annual Halloween Candy Buyback from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Monday to Thursday, Nov. 2-5, at its office at 800 First Ave. SW.

This year the team at Drs. Elrod, Green & Hyland has set a goal to buy back 150 pounds of candy. The office will buy unopened Halloween candy for $1 per pound to send to U.S. soldiers serving overseas as part of the nonprofit effort Operation Gratitude.
“We don’t expect that people will never eat sweets,” Dr. Bobee Hyland said in a press release. “As dentists we want to do our part to encourage moderation. The Halloween Candy Buyback is a fun way for us to do that while supporting our troops.”
The dental office first participated in the program in 2010 and was thrilled by the fantastic participation of the Austin community.
“We collected almost 100 pounds of candy our first year,” Carol Miller, Elrod, Green & Hyland team member, said in a press release. “And that number has grown each year.”
Another way to support the troops, suggested by Halloween Candy Buyback and Operation Gratitude, is to include letters and colorful drawings with the Halloween treats. Elrod, Green & Hyland reached out to Pacelli Elementary School, and students will be drawing a picture and writing a letter to our Service Members that will be sent to Operation Gratitude with the candy collected from the buyback. Individuals will also be able to write a letter or color a picture when they drop their candy off at the office.
Drs. Elrod, Green & Hyland have been serving the Austin community for almost 75 years. Their staff consisting of fifteen team members, work daily to make certain you have a healthy, beautiful smile. They offer routine care, adult orthodontics, dental implants, same-day crowns, conscious sedation dentistry and emergency dental care as well as state-of-the-art digital imaging.
