Children will trade in sugar for toys if they take in 25 pieces of candy to Brownsville’s Kool Smiles dental office this Friday through Nov. 4.
The office is one of 125 in the country participating in Operation Troop Treats, which sends Halloween goodies to U.S. troops stationed abroad.
Sufmitha Koti, the Texas area dental director for Kool Smiles, said last year alone the Kool Smiles offices collected over 5 tons of candy. The collected candy was then sent to U.S. Troops, with Kool Smiles offices sending more than 600 personal care packages.
The care packages also included essential items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, socks and laces.
The dental office invites children from all over the city to take part and bring in candy during open office hours. The office, located on 2921 Boca Chica Blvd. is open Monday through Friday at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, the office is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Children are allowed a limit of three toys per every 25 pieces of candy. The age-appropriate toys are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
