The dentist can sometimes be a trying experience for young children, with many often dreading their visit.
The Chargers made sure that wasn’t the case on Tuesday, partnering with Team Smile to provide complimentary dental work for 300 low-income San Diego children in a carnival-like environment.
With a DJ blaring music and the kids dancing alongside some of their favorite Chargers, the children received thorough dental exams and necessary treatment in a fun-filled environment at Qualcomm Stadium.
“This is an amazing event,” said Ladarius Green, who is a fixture at many community events throughout San Diego. “These kids are lighting up and having fun, which isn’t always the case with the dentist. I have a daughter of my own, so I look at this as what it would mean for her to get care like this if she was unable to. And that is really amazing.”
Team Smile is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “provide underserved children in need of a life changing dental experience in which the excitement and allure of high profile sports reinforces the value of a life-long commitment to dental health care.” This marks the second consecutive year the Chargers have partnered with the organization, and the two were brought together by punter Mike Scifres and Head Trainer James Collins.
“Team Smile is a dental outreach program for kids uninsured in the community that aren’t getting the dental treatment that they need,” said Dr. Bill Bush, co-founder of Team Smile. “The Chargers have been a wonderful partner. I’ve been doing this now for 10 years, and the Chargers are our number one team. The kids may not be excited about their smile as they may have a chipped tooth that they’ve been teased at school about, and in a matter of minutes they are walking out with a new smile. Their parents are excited too, and they can’t believe the Chargers got this started.”
After playing video games with some children and joining them on the dance floor, rookie linebacker Nick Dzubnar summed up how there was nowhere he’d rather be on his off day than giving back to needy children.
“This is awesome! I didn’t know what I was coming into today, but this is so much fun and these kids are having a blast. For us to come out here, sign autographs, take pictures and join them is a lot of fun. I’m happy I’m here. A lot of people have a fear of the dentist, so having this stuff here makes it really exciting for them. And for us, I think it is important to give back to the community. I know when I was a kid, to come to an event like this with professional athletes would have made my day. So I am trying to do stuff that I would have appreciated as a kid to help make their day.”
