Students Receive Free Dental Screenings

For the first time, a St. Joseph school held a free dental screening for students.

"We truly believe in dental health being a real priority for not just St. Joseph but all of northwest Missouri," said Sandy Trosper of Northwest Health Services.

Kindergarten through third grade students at Coleman Elementary took part in the state funded Fluoride Varnish Program.  Northwest Health Services provided dentists and dental hygienists to teach kids about preventive dental health.  Kids were encouraged to brush twice a day, go to the dentist twice a year, and learned how to brush, especially with the help of their parents.

"Until a child is able to write cursive full time, they don't have the dexterity in their wrist to really get to every surface of the teeth," said Trosper.

To help demonstrate the right way to brush their teeth, the St. Joe Mustangs mascot was there to help.

"The kids love Mustang Max.  Of course he has big, beautiful, healthy looking teeth so that's what we want all of those little kids to have," said Trosper.

Kids were also able to get a fluoride varnish for their teeth, and for some, it was a first.

"Many times we're seeing children who have never seen a dentist or 'It's been three or four years since I saw a dentist'," said Trosper.

"And then our school nurse can help follow up and help those parents seek that care so that their child's teeth will be taken care of," said Coleman School Principal Heather Gladhart.

Gladhart is confident that the effects of the program will eventually be seen in the classroom.

"We know that when kids don't feel well, whether it's physically or if their teeth are bothering them, it's going to be hard for them to concentrate and focus here at school.  So we want to make sure that we are meeting all of their needs," said Gladhart.
The kids will get another fluoride varnish before school lets out for the summer.
The St. Joseph School District will review how the program goes at Coleman and make the decision whether or not to have it at other schools.
