At least patients getting root canals, fillings and cleanings will have something to look at if they visit downtown Detroit's newest dental office.
Dr. Robert DiPilla, a University of Detroit Mercy graduate and renowned cosmetic dentist, is already scheduling appointments at his new office on the 16th floor of One Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit.
DiPilla and his associate Dr. Kevin Groth see themselves riding the wave of new restaurants and attractions opening downtown.
"(We'd) rather be the first ones down here than the tenth," DiPilla said.
The office is modeled after his office on 49th and Madison Avenue in Manhattan. That office sits on the 20th floor, he said. DiPilla has been practicing there for 20 years, and also has an office up Woodward Avenue in Birmingham, Mich.
Groth and DiPilla said the move downtown is aimed at allowing those who live and work there to visit a dentist during their lunch break, among other things.
Now, Groth said, a lot of people have to go to early morning appointments or wait until they're finished with work to see the dentist if they work downtown. With DiPilla's new office, patients can come in for a quick appointment at almost anytime.
The 2,000-square-foot office has five exam rooms, each looking out toward the Detroit River. DiPilla said the new office offers a better view than that in New York.
DiPilla's and Groth will perform state-of-the-art dentistry out of the Detroit office. Most of the technology, including a Cerec machine that 3D prints crowns, is newer.
The Cerec machine cuts what's typically a two-visit procedure down to a roughly hour-and-a-half-long visit.
Along with the service upgrades, Groth said the office is just beautiful.
DiPilla said he wants to make it more like an art space than a dentist's office. He intends to get original art hung on the walls by the time patients start coming in.
"There's nothing like this," Groth said. "The details make the office."
They both expect the office to grow. When M-1 Rail finishes up in 2016, people in the greater downtown neighborhoods can shoot down Woodward for a visit.
The new office is in a building managed by Dan Gilbert's Bedrock Real Estate Services. Bedrock Executive Vice President Dan Mullen said in a release that "the need for high quality health care services is increasing" downtown.
The new office "will make it easy for people to get regular dental appointments in a comfortable, convenient and unique setting."
DiPilla was in awe of all the moving parts downtown. He worked at the old Hudson's store as a kid, he said. When he opened a practice in Birmingham in 2002, he wasn't even looking at Detroit at the time.
But, a few years after that, things started looking better in the city where he went to school.
Now he's back.
