AMANDA MULLALLY: Volunteer effort supports dental care

I had the wonderful opportunity last month to participate with fellow Viterbo Nursing students in Dentistry from the Heart, supported by Valley Dental and Dr. Michael Gavin in Onalaska.
Dentistry from the Heart is a worldwide nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free dental care to those in need. In La Crosse County, 12.9 percent of residents live below the poverty level and have no dental insurance or are on Badger Care. There are 36 percent of adults that experience tooth loss due to decay or periodontal disease. As a result in 2014, 1,613 individuals utilized emergency or urgent care health services for traumatic and non-traumatic dental complaints and care.
For the past four years, Valley Dental has been working with Dentistry from the Heart to provide our community with free dental care. This event provided $25,350 in dental health services to 108 individuals. Twenty-eight people volunteered to make this day possible including the entire staff from Valley Dental along with students from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Pre-Dental club and Viterbo Nursing students. This event raised my awareness of the need for our community to provide dental care to the underserved population.
I hope in future years more dental offices will consider collaborating with Dentistry from the Heart to provide a day of dental care. If we can improve the health of the most vulnerable, we improve the health of our community.

In other dental news: Aurident's  3D dental scanners offer superior quality for both model and impression scanning. The Optimet DS 6000 Scanner uses patented proprietary conoscopic holographic technology to generate highly accurate and consistent scans. The DSi 6000 Impression & Model Scanner overcomes the limitation of other scanners by accurately scanning impressions and models where other scanners have difficulty.
