The United Health Foundation has awarded the Florida Department of Health in Alachua County a $1.85 million grant toward the department’s southwest Gainesville dental clinic.
The clinic is located inside the department’s satellite health clinic that opened in the Linton Oaks neighborhood in the spring.
The department established a presence in the neighborhood to provide health and dental care to low-income and uninsured residents who previously lacked access.
The dental clinic is one piece of the department’s Dental Emergency Department Diversion Program, “which aims to improve access to oral health care for county residents, providing preventive and restorative dental care such as examinations, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatment, fillings and tooth extraction,” according to a press release.
The grant will cover costs for a dentist, dental hygienist, two assistants, a dental home coordinator, supplies and equipment, according to Paul Myers, the administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Alachua County.
Health care company UnitedHealth Group established the United Health Foundation in 1999 as a nonprofit organization working to improve access to care.
At 10 a.m. on Oct 14, there will be an open house and check presentation event at the clinic at 816 SW 64th Terrace.
