Scion Dental plans to open an office in Maryland after winning a state contract worth up to $15.4 million over five years.
The Menomonee Falls-based company said Tuesday it was awarded a contract by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to manage dental benefits for the roughly 650,000 Medicaid members in the Maryland Healthy Smiles dental program.
The contract initially runs for three years starting Jan. 1, 2016, and ending Dec. 31, 2018, with a total payment of $8.99 million, said Devan Perry of the Maryland Board of Public Works, which approved the contract. Then there are two, one-year renewals likely for $3.2 million in 2019 and $3.3 million in 2020, he said.
Scion Dental was selected over two other bidders — Delta Dental and DentaQuest Maryland LLC, Perry said.
The company said its Maryland office will house a contract director, dental director and other support staff. In addition, Scion Dental is contracting with a local minority-owned business to build a call center team for the Healthy Smiles program.
Scion Dental said a key to the high technical marks the company received was its use of the enterprise system offered by its sister company, Wonderbox Technologies of Mequon.
