A former dental assistant to a pediatric dentist accused of hurting children has been arrested on charges of fraud and child abuse, WJXT reports.
Dr. Howard S. Schneider, 78, of Jacksonville, turned himself in on Monday and was charged with 11 counts of Medicaid fraud, according to WJXT. Schneider was under investigation by the state of Florida in May after being accused of performing unnecessary dental procedures on children and hurting them. He was also accused of receiving almost $4 million in Medicaid reimbursements for his practice since 2010.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office also had an arrest warrant out for his dental assistant, LaTosha Bevel-Hillsman, 39, after she allegedly performed a procedure on a patient that she was not authorized to perform, WJXT reports. Officials said she hurt the child while conducting a tooth extraction and then “produced unauthorized claims submitted to the Medicaid program for reimbursement,” WJXT reports.
"Essentially, there's been a pattern and practice that we've seen at Dr. Schneider's facilities that we've seen dental assistants and dental hygienists going too far," John Phillips, who is representing plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Schneider, told WJXT. "They can't actually practice dentistry. They can't pull teeth. They can't do procedures."
Hillsman was arrested Tuesday and taken to Duval County Jail. She could face up to 15 years in jail, according to WJXT.
Schneider, who now lives in Georgia, bonded out of jail around 9 p.m. Monday on a $110,000 bond and was released.
