Hundreds of people were flashing brighter smiles after visiting the Abilene Civic Center Friday.
A mobile clinic was set up by the Texas Mission of Mercy to treat anyone who needed dental care free of charge.
Lindsay Wallace doesn't have dental insurance, and she's suffered from a toothache for the last three years.
“It's not fun to deal with,” Wallace said. “I mean even just talking it's like throbbing pain all the time, and to finally have somewhere I can go with no insurance right now, it's a blessing. It's something I've been praying for for a long time.”
Wallace started waiting at the civic center at midnight to take advantage of the free dental clinic.
About 50 dentists and at least 20 hygienists donated their time and they hope to treat about 1,000 patients over two days.
Wallace needed a teeth cleaning and two extractions.
“Yeah, she did great,” said Dr. Todd Pennartz, a volunteer dentist. “She said she was real hard to numb, but it didn't take very long to numb her, and she didn't feel anything.”
Nearly 14 hours after she first lined up, Wallace was done.
“The pain is not there anymore, granted it's real numb, but I can tell a difference from when it was still in there to now, when it's out,” Wallace said. “It's a lot better.”
Wallace had a message for everyone who volunteered their time to give others a healthier smile.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,” Wallace said with enthusiasm. “The fact that you can take time out to donate it to people who need the help that can't afford it is just amazing.”
Free dental care will continue to be available at the Abilene Civic Center Saturday and doors will open at 7 a.m.
