Dentists put smiles back at free dental clinic

About 7 years ago her teeth began falling out as the result of treatment for a separate medical condition. It was painful and disfiguring. It made her uncomfortable for her to smile and share the joy life brought her.
Monday, the Oregon Dental Association’s Mission of Mercy began admitting patients for free dental care at 4 a.m. More than 200 dentists arrived at the Oregon Convention Center along with their assistants, hygenists and lab technicians.
They’re providing the dental care for people who need it, like Turpen.
In the last 5 years this is a program that’s donated just about $5 million worth of free dental care. For the homeless and working poor it’s relieved pain and restored a smile they havn’t had in years.
“I’m so thankful for every single one of them because if it wasn’t for them I’d still be in a very bad situation with very bad teeth,” she told KOIN 6 News.
It’s a rarity for people to wind up a visit to the dentist with a hug. But then again not all patients have as much to be thankful for as Stacey Turpen.
“Thank you so much,” she said. “You guys are so awesome.”
