The Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic, Acadiana District Dental and Dental Hygiene Associations, and LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry are collaborating on renovations to LCHCC’s dental facility in preparation for School of Dentistry’s accreditation in April 2016.
To increase the number of dental hygienists in Acadiana, the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry began a Dental Hygiene Program in partnership with Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic in 1999. The dental hygiene students take classroom courses through distance learning broadcast from the New Orleans campus and receive their clinical training at the clinic.
Approximately 90 students have been educated through the program to date. With a fully operational six chair operatory, a classroom, and a training room, the LSU School of Dentistry has helped LCHCC provide free dental services to its patients and provided a workforce for Acadiana dentists for more than 15 years.
Since opening its doors 22 years ago, Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic has provided and coordinated medical, dental and pharmaceutical services at a value of more than $25.5 million at no cost to its patients. LCHCC offers medical clinics every Tuesday and Thursday evening, with dental clinics every Thursday evening accompanied by daily dental hygiene services provided by the students enrolled in the LSU Dental Hygiene School. Specialty clinics include avoidable blindness eye care, gynecology, nutritional counseling, and skin and breast cancer screenings. LCHCC relies solely on volunteer health care professionals to provide these services. The Clinic is also home to the Community Pharmacy, a collaborative effort with the Lourdes Foundation, which provides medications to eligible, low-income residents of the Acadiana area. The Community Pharmacy is open from 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Thursday, and 9 am to noon on Fridays.
