Plymouth-based Jack Colclough, who studies at Peninsula Dental School, was victorious in the first round, run by the 500-year-old Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The ground-breaking Dental Skills Competition 2015, sponsored sees final year dental students from across Britain demonstrate their skills in a series of challenges. The competition begins with 16 heats, one at each UK dental school, during which the students are asked to undertake complex dental work on a mouth mould, which is then anonymously submitted to the assessors who announce the winner a nail-biting 60 minutes later.
25-year-old Jack was delighted to win the Peninsula round, and says:
“The heat stages of the competition were demanding; it was a pleasant surprise to be announced winner of the Peninsula Dental school heat amongst tough competition, and I'm now looking forward to the next stage in Edinburgh.
“I have little insight into the next stage of the competition, which is exciting and also slightly worrying!
“I'm sure the competition will be tough but it will be a great experience to meet fellow students and colleagues.”
Along with a certificate and trophy, Jack was awarded a travel and accommodation package to compete in the Grand Final in Edinburgh on 10 March 2016. At the Grand Final, the top 16 finalists, from across the UK, will be tasked to undertake a broad range of clinical procedures before determining who will be crowned the overall winner at the Competition’s Grand Final Dinner.
Joint second-place prize was awarded to Plymouth-based Romana Linkova and Zoe Harding. Romana, who was born in Slovakia and now studies at Plymouth, says:
“I would firstly like to thank the RCSEd for giving me the opportunity to take part in this competition.
“The task was to prepare an upper canine tooth for a porcelain fused to metal crown.
“I was very calm while doing the task, it was a very rewarding experience to go through.
“I feel both happy and proud to have come second, but slightly disappointed because the winner was better by a very small difference! I have proven to myself that my clinical skills are of an excellent standard and quality and I am really looking forward to continuing improving them.”
28 year-old Zoe, who grew up in Bristol and currently lives in Cornwall, says:
“The competition allowed us an hour to prepare an upper canine tooth for a porcelain fused to metal crown.
“The preparations were judged on every part of the prep- reductions, line angles, margins and the finish. “My fellow students are becoming skilled practitioners in restorative dentistry, which made the competition tough.
“Everyone who took part was given their results with a breakdown of marks for each category – providing an excellent opportunity to reflect on their work. “Coming second was a boost to my confidence that I certainly needed since completing similar restorative work on real patients is a whole different ball game.”
As well as prizes being awarded to the winner and runner-ups, all participants of the competition will receive a certificate of participation, as well as a year’s affiliation to the RCSEd’s Pre-Membership Dental Affiliate Network.
