Volunteer dentists and hygienists provided no-cost dental care and preventive education to residents of the Lubbock area at Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on September 18-19, 2015 during a Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) event, sponsored by the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation (TDASF) and supported by the Texas Dental Association.
During the 2-day event, more than 60 dentists provided 703 patients with $487,881 worth of charitable dental care. Many dentists were local to the Lubbock area, but volunteer dentists came from the all over the state to volunteer, with some traveling from as far as Houston. Approximately 400 other community volunteers from the dental profession, businesses, churches, and local community groups were on hand to assist with the 40-chair mobile dental clinic that delivered pain-relieving and restorative dental care at no cost to underserved Texans.
Oral health contributes to overall health, but many patients experience barriers to care. Those who receive complimentary dental care at TMOMs are extremely grateful. One patient said, "I'd just like to tell all these volunteers, thanks for the blessing and thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to get my mouth fixed."
TMOM will host one more event in 2015, in Abilene on October 30-31. TMOM is open to all on a first-come, first-served basis.
