NADL: U.S. Dental Industry Needs To Obtain Continuing Education To Further Increase Standards
The National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL) created a campaign called "What's In Your Mouth" to increase the awareness of the decreasing standards in the nation's dental industry.
Among the states in the United States, only four required dental technicians to obtain continuing education or be certified, according to the research conducted by the National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL). The NADL created a campaign called "What's In Your Mouth" to increase the awareness of the decreasing standards in the nation's dental industry.
The campaign aims to inform dentists that some of the technicians whom they trusted the most could lack the knowledge and skills when creating dental restorations including veneers, bridges, dentures, and crowns that could be placed permanently in their dental patients' mouths.
Gary Iocco, co-chairperson of the NADL Public Awareness Committee, said that dentists and dental technicians are partners and should, therefore, make a good team "in helping grow an oral health practice." While operations are performed behind the scenes, all dental technicians are considered to be a crucial part in ensuring that the deliveries of dental care to patients are of high quality and standards.
The NADL's initiative suggests that dentists need to ensure that their technicians are capable of performing quality restorations to secure the safety of their patients. They should find Certified Dental Technicians to work with, stay up-to-date on the most recent legislative updates, and that they should always be informing their patients that the care they are receiving come from Certified Dental Technicians who perform quality dental restorations.
"It is important that dentists seek to work with individuals and laboratories that have voluntarily achieved 'third-party verification' of their skills, knowledge and operating standards," said Iocco.
He added that the association wanted patients to know that there are several dental technicians as well as dental laboratories that committed to provide quality and standard dental care.
Today, the dental industry continuously implements the most up-to-date technologies and materials for dental-related works, however, dental technicians are still not obliged to subject their selves for mandatory continuing education.
