NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – A new way to keep New Haven student healthy started today. Five Elm City schools now offer basic dental services to kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. There are 17 New Haven schools with health clinics , and 5 of them have now added dental clinics .
“It’s not easy to access health care , we know that’s challenging for many families,” explained New Haven Schools Superintendent Garth Harries. “It’s particularly challenging for families in our community.”
The schools now offering dental care are: Troup, King-Robinson, Hill Central, Truman and Barnard. The hope is the convenience will make
“If we’re at school and my mom she’s at work, and my dad’s at work too and I’m at school, I can go to the dentist here,” Glass said.
“Parents don’t have a chance to bring kids to the dentist,” added 4th grader Jamelette Dixon, “So they can just bring them here to get their teeth checked.”
Healthy teeth make for more than just pretty smiles. Tooth decay represents the number one childhood disease in the United States, so it only makes sense to have regular care at the one place where students regularly go.
“We don’t want them to miss school,” explained dental hygienist Tracey Oberg. “So having the services right here within the school, we can see them, send them back to class. If they have problems, we can connect them with our dental partners as well.”
