How Much Does a Root Canal Cost?

If you’re like most people, you’re not too thrilled to go to the dentist. And facing extensive dental work — especially without dental insurance — can be downright terrifying. When your dentist recommends that you get a root canal, you may wonder how much it’s going to cost. It’s important to do your research and compare self-pay prices, since they can vary greatly by area and even by provider within an area.

A root canal is a common procedure done on a tooth with an infected or inflamed root. The dentist drills into the tooth, removes the infected or inflamed tissue and then uses a permanent material to fill the canal where that tissue once was.
If you have no dental insurance and need a root canal, you should first know that prices are different for front teeth and molars. Also, the prices given here are only for the root-canal procedure. Afterward, the tooth has an exposed hole in it. While this can be fixed with a filling, the most common method for tooth restoration is to use a dental crown, which is a cap that looks like a tooth. A crown can cost $600 to $1,400 for those without insurance, but it may cost significantly more if the dentist has to install a post to provide more support for the tooth and crown.
With that out of the way, let’s start by looking at national median costs. According to data provided by OkCopay, the national median costs of root canals for patients without insurance are:
  • Front tooth root canal: $700
  • Molar root canal: $900
Median pricing, however, doesn’t show you the whole picture, since prices can be drastically higher or lower based on where you are treated.
OkCopay reports data for medical providers in 16 metro areas and found the cheapest front tooth root canal to be only $200, available in San Francisco. The cheapest molar root canal is $210 and is found in Union City, New Jersey. There are relatively affordable root canals available in other cities as well.
