Are Dental Implants Better Than Dentures?

If you think dentures are the only way to replace your missing teeth, then chances are you’ve never heard of dental implants. This exciting procedure is exactly what it sounds like: they’re false teeth that are surgically put into a person’s mouth where teeth are missing. Although dentures are a perfectly fine solution to the problem of missing teeth, dental implants offer several key advantages.
Here are just a few.
They Allow You to Chew Your Food Better.
Implants can allow you to chew your food better, and speak more clearly than with dentures, which can slip and slide. Studies have shown that in comparison to full dentures, implants can improve a person’s chewing efficiency, and speaking.

They’re More Aesthetically Appealing.
Implants are far more aesthetically pleasing than dentures are. In other words, they look better. Implants look more natural than dentures, which means you can smile with even more confidence. Plus, they can prevent the changes made to your face from missing teeth. Usually, the teeth surrounding an empty space slowly move to try to fill in the gap, which makes them harder to clean and increases the risk of some oral diseases. What’s more, a person’s jawbone begins to atrophy where a tooth is missing, because there’s not enough stimulation there. Implants prevent this from happening by putting in an artificial root.
They Last Longer Than Dentures.
Best of all, implants last longer than dentures. With proper care, dental implants can last for more than two decades, and won’t need to be replaced. Long-term data also suggests that implants last for a much longer time than conventional dental restoration. Just be sure to take care of them, that is.
Dental implants, which have a success rate of up to 98% according to scientific literature, are the replacement teeth of the future. Up to 3 million Americans have dental implants, and another 500,000 get them each year. Consequently, the U.S. dental implant and prosthetic market is projected to reach $6.4 billion by 2018.

Connected Smart Floss Reminds You To Keep Up With Dental Care

Everyone should know the benefits of flossing. Doing so can help prevent periodontal diseases, which have been linked to everything from heart problems to diabetes.
However, remembering to consistently floss every night is an entirely different story.
Flosstime hopes to change that. Having launched on Kickstarter with a $15,000 goal, Flosstime is a connected smart dental floss dispenser that gets mounted on a bathroom mirror to consistently help people care for their teeth. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Kickstarter campaign received over $11,000 toward its goal via 137 backers.
The way it works is simple. Press a button on the Flosstime unit and it will dispense 18 inches of floss — the recommended amount by the American Dental Association — with the device lighting up to flash a blue smile. Once the floss is dispensed, the unit gives users a 90-second flossing timer via a blue light that moves clockwise around Flosstime's circular ring.

If you fail to press the button to dispense any floss for several days, the unit lights up with an orange frown.
In the case of a shared bathroom, Flosstime has a dual-user feature that separates its light indicators into two parts, letting two people floss at the same time.
Thinking of kids and getting them into the healthy habit of flossing daily early on, the minds behind Flosstime created plastic snap-on frames — in the form of a frog, crab and goldfish — that clip onto the unit to make flossing more inviting.
A $17 early-bird pledge via its Kickstarter page will get you a Flosstime unit.

Dental office trading candy for toys

Children will trade in sugar for toys if they take in 25 pieces of candy to Brownsville’s Kool Smiles dental office this Friday through Nov. 4.
The office is one of 125 in the country participating in Operation Troop Treats, which sends Halloween goodies to U.S. troops stationed abroad.
Sufmitha Koti, the Texas area dental director for Kool Smiles, said last year alone the Kool Smiles offices collected over 5 tons of candy. The collected candy was then sent to U.S. Troops, with Kool Smiles offices sending more than 600 personal care packages.
The care packages also included essential items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, socks and laces.
The dental office invites children from all over the city to take part and bring in candy during open office hours. The office, located on 2921 Boca Chica Blvd. is open Monday through Friday at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, the office is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children are allowed a limit of three toys per every 25 pieces of candy. The age-appropriate toys are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Rainelle Dental Center starts off strong

Phones are ringing non stop and patients are filling the waiting room of Rainelle's Dental Center.
"We're overwhelmed with lists of people that we still haven't called, we're booked all the way into November right now, and so I think people are really taking advantage of this new facility," said Cynthia Stacks, a dental hygienist at Rainelle Dental Center.
The dental center opened less than a month ago. It offers a sliding fee for services based on income, which allows many people in the area access to health care they couldn't afford before.
"Common problems are from a lack of dental care in this area, with limited services. A lot of people are here seeing a dentist for their first time. We have patients that have never even seen a dentist before," said Christopher Clay, CFO of Rainelle Dental and Medical Centers.
Employees say that they are focusing on educating first time patients. Problems like cavities, root issues and decay seem to be the most common.
"We have seen a lot of children that also have rampant decay as well, so it's not just adults that we're seeing the problem with, unfortunately it's a lot of children, too," said Dr. Heather Heaster, a dentist at Rainelle Dental Center.
For patients with many severe dental issues, a treatment plan is developed.

6 questions to ask your child’s pediatric dentist

It’s essential to teach our children about the importance of dental care and proper hygiene at an early age. Your approach of introducing dental care is crucial leading up to your child’s first encounter with a dentist.
While it’s your primary responsibility to introduce correct dental habits, you are not alone in this. Pediatric dentists exist to support you during this all-important phase of your child’s health.
Your child’s first experience with a dentist may turn out to be their most memorable and will have a deep impact with how they regard future dental visits. As an accompanying adult, it’s a good idea to know what to do when you get there. Asking questions about age-appropriate dental care maintenance can help you take care of your child’s pearly whites and gums at home.

Here are a few important things you can ask your child’s pediatric dentist:
1. How should I clean my child’s teeth? Is there a “right” way to do it?
Learning how to help your child clean his teeth and gums correctly is the first step towards a healthy dental condition that could prevent cavities in the future. Toddlers, especially, are known to munch on just about everything that they can put in their mouth. Teaching them how to clean their dental area regularly and correctly prevents further dental damage.
2. Do I need to find a separate dentist for my child?
First, it’s important to know that not all dentists know how to handle children in their respective dental practices. Children are very different from regular patients. Many of them find it hard to be patient or to sit still during the appointment. Some are hesitant, do not trust the dentist, and may throw even tantrums. A good pediatric dentist knows how to handle your child. They are trained to talk to a child and to provide a caring and fun ambiance that can help ease a child’s anxiety towards dentists.
3. Do thumb-sucking and pacifiers really affect my child’s teeth growth?
Since children’s main food source is breast milk or bottled milk, it seems normal for them to thumb-suck and use pacifiers all the time. It’s one way to hush them whenever they cry. But many mothers are worried about how these habits can affect their child’s dental development. There are those who believe that these habits can cause them to have overbites or a weaker teeth structure. To make sure about the possible consequences, ask your child’s pediatric dentist about this.
4. Does my child need dental sealants?
Dental sealants are commonly used by adults who wish to prevent dental cavities. Adults don’t grow new, permanent teeth anymore so it’s necessary to take good care of them. Children, however, still have milk teeth that will soon wear off and be replaced by stronger, permanent teeth. On the other hand, tooth decay is becoming common among children these days because of their eating habits. Having dental sealants can spare your child from the burden of tooth decays and cavities. Consult a pediatric dentist about your options and which dental procedure is best for your child.
5. When should my child start using toothpaste?
Parents are advised to use a clean washcloth to clean their infant child’s gums and mouth area. When the child turns a few months older, he can use his first toothbrush with an aid of clean and lukewarm water to drive away bacteria. Normally, as soon as his first tooth shows, your child can use a fluoridated toothpaste the size of a pea. The kind of toothbrush and toothpaste that will be used should be upon the recommendation of your pediatric dentist. Remember, no two mouths are created the same. Your child may have different needs than the information that you’ve read. Also, it is important to monitor your child while he is brushing his teeth. Toothpaste is not meant to be swallowed.
6. How often should my child visit a dentist?
Depending on your child’s current dental condition, he may be required to go back to the dental office once every six months if he has healthy teeth. If your child has dental problems, he may be required to visit more often than that. To know more about your child’s dental schedule, talk to his pediatric dentist.
Don’t be too shy to ask necessary questions about your child’s dental health. Children can’t rely on anyone else but you to help him gear up for a better dental future.

“Our team is committed to lifetime dental care because good oral health is integral to overall health. By participating in this program, our goal is to engage patients and encourage them to adopt an ongoing oral care program and a lifelong regimen of preventative care.”

An Austin dental office is offering area children a chance to give back some of their extra Halloween candy and serve a good cause all at the same time.
Dentists Elrod, Green and Hyland DDS is hosting its fourth annual Halloween Candy Buyback from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Monday to Thursday, Nov. 2-5, at its office at 800 First Ave. SW.

This year the team at Drs. Elrod, Green & Hyland has set a goal to buy back 150 pounds of candy. The office will buy unopened Halloween candy for $1 per pound to send to U.S. soldiers serving overseas as part of the nonprofit effort Operation Gratitude.
“We don’t expect that people will never eat sweets,” Dr. Bobee Hyland said in a press release. “As dentists we want to do our part to encourage moderation. The Halloween Candy Buyback is a fun way for us to do that while supporting our troops.”
The dental office first participated in the program in 2010 and was thrilled by the fantastic participation of the Austin community.
“We collected almost 100 pounds of candy our first year,” Carol Miller, Elrod, Green & Hyland team member, said in a press release. “And that number has grown each year.”
Another way to support the troops, suggested by Halloween Candy Buyback and Operation Gratitude, is to include letters and colorful drawings with the Halloween treats. Elrod, Green & Hyland reached out to Pacelli Elementary School, and students will be drawing a picture and writing a letter to our Service Members that will be sent to Operation Gratitude with the candy collected from the buyback. Individuals will also be able to write a letter or color a picture when they drop their candy off at the office.
Drs. Elrod, Green & Hyland have been serving the Austin community for almost 75 years. Their staff consisting of fifteen team members, work daily to make certain you have a healthy, beautiful smile. They offer routine care, adult orthodontics, dental implants, same-day crowns, conscious sedation dentistry and emergency dental care as well as state-of-the-art digital imaging.
